Questioning Choices, Understanding, Self-Control, Civilization, Death, and Unusual

“Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat.”
-- Ralph Ellison

Do you think the things that happen in your life are within your control and influenced by your choices? See answer.
Things that happen in my life, are influenced by my choices, but they may not be within my control.
Is happiness an end in itself or just a side effect of other actions?
It depends on if you have defined “happiness” as a basis for your life. I always strive to be truly happy, and in all things, regardless of my circumstances. It is a choice I have made for my life.
Do you believe success is more about luck or hard work? Why do you think so?
“Luck” hits and misses in life. Hard work, on the other hand, can guarantee success. It is a choice.
Why do we remember some seemingly insignificant events, but forget important moments?
Who do you mean, “WE”? Many of us don’t forget much. I remember a trip to grandma’s at 3 years of age. My memory is fairly complete… unless I drink too much bourbon. I rarely forget important moments in my life.
How do you consider creativity?
Creativity has brought us to this point in history. Everything we do has roots in creativity. The fact that you want us to “consider,” is a fashion of creativity.
A friend called me a "runner through water." He said this when he was referring to me trying to make my teacher fall in love with me and trying to reach my goal of being a doctor. What did he mean?
He doesn’t understand your goals. Continue to reach for the golden ring.
“Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.”
-- Roy T. Bennett
How do you open people’s eyes that capitalists that have no regard to morals, ethics, social order, human qualities or environment are willing to sacrifice all this for generating profit?
You have a very narrow understanding of most capitalists, especially regarding sacrifice.
Why should you not celebrate witnessing karma? Schadenfreude?
You should leave problems in life in the hands of karma. You don’t need to dirty your hands with retribution. Celebrating “karma” would be celebrating the retribution. Let karma do its work, and feel sorry for the target. They don’t have a clue.
What would you do differently if you were sure that your current life influences your next existence?
Be very good in life. Be selfless in all I do, especially when it comes to helping others.
Do you live your life based on the rules you've been taught or is there some other form of guidance you use to provide direction and purpose for yourself? In either case, what is a short history of how you found the guidance you have?
My mother was a good teacher. What I didn’t learn from her, I learned from the Air Force and my personal life. The common trait in all of this is learning. I saw, I questioned, and I learned. If I failed, I tried again and again, until I succeeded or understood that it wasn’t to be. “Understanding” was also a lesson in learning.

Do you see that nothing is changing unless something motivates it to change?

Change is always “motivated” by something.
How do you balance pursuing your passions with the responsibilities of everyday life?

You don’t. Responsibilities come first, like education. Then you can work on your passions. Responsibilities are the foundation for everything that comes after. If you don’t deal with your responsibilities, you won’t be able to focus on your passions.
"Education is the foundation upon which we build our future."
-- Christine Gregoire
Is self-control a sign of being wise and frugal?
It is a big sign, but, now you need to work on being wise and frugal.
Is the saying, "If you stop chasing after anything, then everything will be yours," true? Why or why not?
Only if you’re a follower of philosophy. If you stop chasing anything you can focus on being truly happy. Strive to be truly happy always, and in all things, regardless of your circumstances. It is a choice.
Do you prefer to be rich or poor?
I prefer to be like I am. Not rich, nor poor, but truly happy in my circumstances.
How do you know if you are really being fully honest with yourself about your current lifestyle?
My “lifestyle” is my life. I don’t have a style, I just live. If people want to call it my “style” it is up to them. As for being “fully honest” with myself, I don’t have a style. I have to laugh at this. It would take so much of my time to make me fit into a style, I just prefer to be me.
Is the truth better than lies?
The truth can hurt, but it is still better than lies.
How do you recognize that your journey is unique to you?
I’m the only one on it. If another person were going through the same stuff, it would be their journey, not mine. The way we process the information is unique to each person. One could fail while the other could succeed. Our journey is ours to own.
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”
-- Heraclitus
Is civilization an accidental byproduct of the human struggle for survival?
No. People live by laws that help them to survive. It can still be a struggle, but it’s not accidental.
What is some advice for someone who believes in other lives and feels unable to continue this one due to a lack of joy and purpose?
"Joy and purpose" are your responsibility. If you have none, joy and purpose, you aren’t doing your job. You need to change your journey. Find your joy, and then find your purpose. I strive to be truly happy always, and in all things, regardless of my circumstances. It is my choice. It is not a hard road to travel.
Is it true that time is a thief?
Yes, and we help the thief to steal from us. If we plan our day, the thief won’t be able to make a living.
How do I stop lying so much? I automatically lie in situations to stop others from worrying about me and people, but I feel guilty afterward.
So stop lying. Life is a bitch, and people need to recognize this so they can plan better. Let people worry so they can learn to fend for themselves. You can’t be the grownup all the time for all the people. Let them learn to swim in the ocean of life.
I want to die 3 times. How many times do you want to die?
I’m certain I will die more times than that. We will live many lives, and learn many things before we can rest.
What is your own philosophical idea?
Live to learn.
“Study hard, what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent, and original manner possible.”
-- Richard Feynmann
What could you do if there is no death?
Live forever. There is little wiggle room for anything else. Make the best of it.
What are some characteristics of an old soul? How can one differentiate between having an old soul and simply being wise beyond their years?
If you have been reborn, you might have brought what you learned to the new life. If so, you could be a child with an old soul. Because of the chance of being reborn, it can be difficult to differentiate between an “old soul” and being “wise beyond years.”
You find yourself in a dream. What do you do?
Survive.
How did you know if your existence is worthwhile?
If you have been selflessly helping others to succeed then, your life has been worthwhile. If you have been selfish in your life, it hasn’t been. Be truly happy in your life, selflessly helping others, and your existence will have been worthwhile.
If humans evolved, why do we have souls?
Everything living has a soul. Our souls have evolved with us.
Why is there existence and not non-existence?
There is both, existence and non-existence. If you live, you physically exist. If you die, you don’t. This a pretty simple concept. It is, or it isn’t.
“If you can see something, and it is wrong, you can fight it with a reasonable chance of success. Fighting the nonexistent is worse than pointless: Don Quixote tilted at windmills, but at least windmills are real.”
-- Mike Klepper
Is it better to be unusual or normal and ordinary?
It is better to be unusual and normal. Being just unusual can get you locked up.
Why should anyone care about an atheist's belief in the existence of a god?
They shouldn’t, any more than anyone should care about a theist belief. Have your beliefs, and keep them to yourself. This argument about the existence of God is pointless. Neither side has any proof to bolster their argument. Without proof, both sides should be quiet lest they sound stupid. Oh, I’m sorry. Both sides have already sounded stupid… and continue to be so.
Why doesn't life constantly improve with the invention of new technologies?
It does… if the new technology improves life.
How do atheists define the concept of a god? Is it important for someone to believe in something that may not exist but brings them comfort and hope?
Neither side has any proof for their argument. Until they have some incontrovertible proof, both sides should shut up about it, instead of sounding like idiots to everyone else.
How can someone effectively get rid of someone who is constantly bothering them but is not considered a stalker?
File a “no-contact order” with the court.
What steps can we take to create a peaceful life for ourselves? What are the essential elements of a peaceful and happy life?
It is a choice you need to make. Remove all “drama” from your life. Strive to be truly happy always, and in all things, regardless of your circumstances. If people bring you drama, tell them to take it somewhere else.
“Happiness was but the occasional episode in a general drama of pain.”
-- Thomas Hardy

Before you go getting your panties in a bunch - it is essential to understand that this is just an opinion site and, as such, can be subjected to scrutiny by anyone with a differing opinion. It doesn't make either view any more right or wrong than the other. Opinion, presented in this context, is a way of inciting others to think and, hopefully, to form their own opinions, if they haven't already done so. This is also why, occasionally, I will present an "opinion" just to stir an emotional pot. Where it may sound like I agree with the statements made, I'm more interested in getting others to consider an alternate viewpoint.

I fervently hope that we keep open and active minds when reading opinions while engaging in peaceful and constructive discussion in an arena of mutual respect concerning those opinions offered. After twenty-three years of military intelligence, I believe that engaging each other in this manner, and in this arena, is a way we will learn tolerance and respect for differing beliefs, cultures, and viewpoints.

We all fall from grace, some more often than others; it is part of being human. God's test for us is what we learn from the experience... and what we do afterward.

Questioning Age, Parents, Happy, Prayer, Caring, and Pride

“I'm not afraid of death; I just don't want to be there when it happens.”
-- Woody Allen

As you get older, what are you becoming more and more afraid of?

I thought it was death, but that is so wrong. I don’t fear death. It is the doorway to the next life. I suppose it would be being paralyzed, at 71 years of age.

What incident changed your personality?

For me, it was joining the Air Force. If it doesn’t change your personality you’re not paying attention.

Is it true that no one comes to hear without his own permission?
It is a “free will” state. If someone wants you to leave, be skippy, and leave. If no one cares, then stay and enjoy the show. Permission to exercise your “free will” is up to the presenter.

Why does your brain sometimes trick you into remembering events that never happened?

It never happens. As much as I’d like it to happen, I have total recall. Damn myself.

Why does it feel like this World is falling into a giant "bullshit" blackhole, and we have passed the event horizon?
We have never passed the “event horizon.” When the world gets into the last breath, someone will cry foul, and we will work to get ourselves to an equilibrium.
Is learning from mistakes with higher wisdom a sign of being wise?
Isn’t using “higher wisdom” a sign of being wise? Is this a trick question?
"We are not what we know but what we are willing to learn."
-- Mary Catherine Bateson
Who comes first in our life, parents or God?
Parents, and then they introduce you to God, or you find God on your own.
How do people give predictions when no one knows about the future?
They give their best guess.
How would you differentiate between a dumb question and an obvious one?

I’m going to give my best shot at this. One is obvious, and one is dumb. Did I get it right? These questions are getting harder and harder.
Between wisdom and intelligence, which one is better than the other?
Intelligence can get you into trouble, and wisdom can get you out. You choose.
Has God answered your prayers?
I have everything God thinks I need, and I am truly happy, so my prayers are answered. Have I missed something?
A 24-year-old woman chased me down. I’m 60. We had sex and broke up. Why?
She is 24 years old and you are 60. Do the math.
"There are certain obvious criteria—raising children, growing older together, how different career and life transitions align—that can pose challenges."
-- Matt Lundquist
What is a stronger word for happy?
Ecstatic.
Is it true that sometimes failure can actually be a good thing, better than success? How?
Perseverance. If you fail and continue trying, you might come up with something better than you thought. Failure is an opportunity to learn, and to try again. Learning is why we are here.
Is the fear of failure driven by perfectionism?
That makes a lot of sense.
How do I move on and accept myself?
Think about this: You can stop, sit down, and become a vegetable, or you can keep moving forward and learn to accept who you are… or change into something much better. Everything is a choice you have to make for yourself. You can not put this choice on someone else. It is your choice. If you don’t like who you have become, change. Again, it is your choice.
Can God still come to this world?
God can do whatever God wants.
Why is God making me suffer if I haven't done any wrong to anybody?
God is not making you suffer. Your suffering is something you or someone else has done. Don’t jump and blame God. Any “suffering” you feel has its roots on earth. I would look to home.
“In a simple, direct, personal way He is presenting us with the reality of a God who does not condemn the world, but loves it more than it can believe or imagine. A God who can enter into the depths of our suffering is not repulsed by our woundedness or disfigurements, but who meets us wherever and whoever we are, heals us by bringing us ever closer to himself.”
-- Pope Francis
What is a powerful morning prayer to start your day with God?
“Thank you!” Any day on this side of the dirt is a great day. It requires nothing less than a “thank you” to the Big Guy upstairs.
Why does God still love people who are atheists?
God has not given up hope.
What qualifies one to be God?
God is an omnipotent creator who has been, is now, and will always be. There can be only one God.
Why does loss give you perspective?
Nothing is permanent. Having perspective can be a bitch.
How can we tell if God wants us to stop praying because our prayers are not being answered?
Perseverance, maybe? God wants you to do what you think is right. Maybe, your prayers are not being answered because... they are the wrong prayers.
Why does God take our children and leave us to suffer?
Learning.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
-- Benjamin Franklin
Why does society care so much about transgender people, but care so little about people with autism?
I really don’t give one rat’s ass about transgender people. They have made a choice. People with autism don’t have a choice. I think you will find that most people in society could care less about transgenders… unless they use the wrong restroom. That will just piss me off.
What is the meaning of the quote “just one life”?
They must be an atheist.
Is it better to be homeless or go to jail?
Both choices suck. You usually don’t have a choice if you go to jail. However, you do have a choice to be homeless. It is better for you to work hard, to not be homeless.
Why do atheist always want to live close to Christians? Why don't they want live closer to Muslims?
It has to do with the country we live in.
How many times have you rebuilt your life, from scratch?
Once, and, it taught me many things. The “big lesson” is that suicide is never an answer, no matter how much you love the heartless “person.” Pick yourself out of the pit of despair and rebuild your life.
Can you provide a meaningful quote from an ancient Greek philosopher and explain its significance?
(See the quote below) It is the same road whether you travel up or down, but you can't step in the same river.
“The road up and down is one and the same.”
-- Heraclitus
How can one express pride in God?
Every Sunday people express their pride during Church services.
What is the difference between fate and destiny, and do you believe in either?

Fate, or destiny, is in your hands. It is the future of your life. What you decide in life has much to do with what happens to you in the future. You can change fate or destiny, your future… if you’re not going down in a plane crash. Take note: There is a time when your thought is too late. Other than being too late, your life is yours to live. Every decision or choice you make affects your fate, your destiny. Make good choices or decisions.
Are dogs God's creation?
Everything is God’s creation, even Satan.
Can atheists live without Christians?
If Christians can live without atheists, atheists can live without Christians.

Do you realize that God is real?
I realize it. I read Genesis. There is a reason God doesn’t write anything down, anymore. And, my definition of God differs from the church.
Is frugality a sign of being wise?
In a way. Being frugal can protect your money for better things, which is wise.
"Without frugality, none can be rich, and with it very few would be poor."
-- Samuel Johnson

Thanksgiving 2015: Share Your Appreciation Day (Updated and reposted from 11/23/2015)

When we meet real tragedy in life, we can react in two ways - either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits, or by using the challenge to find our inner strength. Thanks to the teachings of Buddha, I have been able to take this second way.
-- Dalai Lama

What are you thankful for?  Oh, let's get past the bullshit we know everyone wants to hear.  What are you, unselfishly and truly, thankful for? I'm thankful that my Mom and Dad didn't suffer long before they passed.  I'm thankful that the rest of my family has good health.  I'm so thankful my kids and grandkids are healthy and doing well for themselves.  I am thankful I have been there when people have needed me.  And, I am thankful to have known my ex-wife.

Selfishly, we tend to be "thankful" for our lifestyle, our many loves, and the food on the table.  Our real thanks should go to those who make life worth living - those around us; family, friends, and those we don't yet know.  The checker at the supermarket, the guy dumping your trash, the bag lady standing on the corner or sleeping under the overpass, and the postman. All of these people add color to the canvas of our lives.

We tend to focus on the pretty flowers in God's painting, and ignore the background which gives it meaning; the backstory that makes the subject pop out at us.  What is the point of interest in the photo at the beginning of this article?  the photo above?  Is it the beggar, or the multitude too busy with their own selfish lives to concern the beggar with more than a cursory glance?  Is it the drabness of the poor clothing, and blanket, in contrast to the surroundings and the reds and blues of the passerby? Or is it the guilt we feel by just looking at it?

Guilt is a strong emotion that, though denial, drives the selfishness in most of us.  We look at the poor that inhabit our streets and think to ourselves, "Not my circus, not my monkey." We know full well it is our circus, and we are the clowns running it.  These poor exist because we allow it, nurture it, and then ignore or ridicule it.  It is a sad cycle of "sociological sado-masochism" we cannot seem to break.

So, what am I thankful for, selfishly?  I'm thankful that I'm not a beggar.  I'm thankful I was given an upbringing that instilled in me the strength to carry on in the face of adversity; the strength to carry on when all seems lost.  I'm thankful for loving friends who have helped me when I have fallen.  I'm thankful for those in the military who serve to keep us safe so we may continue to enjoy the fruits of our labor.  I am thankful for my God, and my faith in something greater than myself. And, I am selfishly thankful, to be allowed another chance, each morning, to excel at whatever task or challenge, God might throw my way.

Take this season, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, to reflect on what you are truly thankful for. Think about those that don't have a pot to piss in.  Think about those who own nothing, of any value, to be selfish about.

I have seen the poorest of the poor, on the street, take an offering of a stranger and share it with their lot, their friends; an act, the mere idea of which, would escape many of us.  Maybe it's time we consider sharing half our sandwich.  Maybe, it's time to reach down and take the beggar by the hand, look them in the eye, and tell them you see them.  They are not invisible to you; they do not disappear into the background of the life God painted for you.

This season, just don't say "thank you" for the service that people risk their all to keep us safe and secure.  Thank more than just our military members.  Thank the police, the firemen, and all those first responders who risk their lives when called.  This season, learn to shake their hands and give them a hug.  God knows they deserve it. More, they deserve to hear it... before they die in service to us.

This season, if you are thankful for someone, let them know.  Tell them and explain by telling them why?  Your reason will mean so much more than just the thanks for the job well done.  You might learn more about yourself for the effort.
“We join spokes together in a wheel,
but it is the center hole
that makes the wagon move.
We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside
that holds whatever we want.
We hammer wood for a house,
but it is the inner space
that makes it livable.
We work with being,
but non-being is what we use.”
-- Lao Tzu
This season, learn to recognize that, sometimes, it is what you don't have that makes life worth living.  Sometimes, it is what we don't see that is our true blessing. And, what we don't hear, has the greatest meaning.  Sometimes, what we do with the "empty space" will make our lives and the lives of those around us, worth living.  Maybe we should spend more time focusing on this empty space.

I wish, for all of my readers, the happiest of the season.  God bless all of us, and God bless these United States!

Questioning Death, Dollars, Arrogance, Free Will, Benefits, and Wisdom

“To live is to die. To die is to live. To avoid death is to avoid living.”
-- Sunday Adelaja

How can you live to die?
We all live to die: Birth, life, and death. We all live to die, somewhere down the road.
What do you value most in life, if I may ask?
“Life” is my answer. I value life, more than anything. My children's lives, my friends' lives, my ex-wife's life, and anyone around me who has their life threatened. Life is the most precious commodity on earth.

Is it better to study philosophy later in life when one has some maturity, life experience, and common sense, or end up in wild cul-de-sacs?
Philosophy will make so much more sense later in life.
I am 60 years old. Why has it taken so long for the exhibition part of me to come out?

You need reassurance, that you haven’t lost your sexuality. If you haven’t lost it now, wait until you’re 70.
Can faith and mathematics be connected in any way?
Not that I can see.
How do you live according to your values?
First, you have to create a life of value, you can stand by. A life of value is a life you continuously live. If there is a value that you want to have, it should be similar to the other values you have. If it isn’t, why do you want it? All of your values should be good and righteous. People should see your values and be impressed. When people see you coming, they should think, “Here comes a man with great values.” People should want to emulate you.
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
-- Mahatma Gandhi
If life gives you dollars, what do you buy?
Dinner.
Can proof be understood without belief?
Certainly. I understand many “proofs” without having to believe in them. Santa Clause stands in front of me, as proof, and yet I don’t believe in him. God is proof in my mind, yet I do believe in him. Two characters we are familiar with. Yet, I only believe in one. Proof can be tricky. It can be, and yet not be.
Is the mind forever?
Yes, but the mind might get a short circuit. A person could end up being a dribbling idiot.
What is a believable lie I can tell my mom as to why I have been gone with her car all night and it is 2:00 the next afternoon?
Tell her you had the sex of a lifetime. Thank her for the use of her car. (Smile widely, like you really had the sex of a lifetime.)
Is empathy “feeling with” rather than “feeling for”?
Yes.
Have you ever received a gift you were sure was being re-gifted?
My aunt was filthy rich. She delighted in regifting things she received, I caught a couple of them.
"It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving."
-- Saint Teresa of Calcutta
Do arrogant people have a higher rate of being cruel and malicious toward other people, who are humble? Is arrogance behind every evil action?
Being a humble person, I would say, arrogant people have a lock on being cruel and malicious towards others, who are humble. Arrogance is the seed that grows evil deeds.
What does a bad Internet connection teach you?
To spend the money to get a quality connection.
Would you believe words or actions?
If you are a trusting soul, you will get screwed listening to words. Actions are the only facts you can believe.
Why do people generally tend to like humble people?
Humble people are generally safe to be around.
Is realizing my own mistake a sign of being wise and having wisdom?
If you have made a “mistake” it is a sign that you are still working on wisdom. Realizing the mistake, hopefully, will prevent you from repeating the mistake. Not making mistakes is, either, a sign of having wisdom, or a sign that you aren’t going to put yourself out there by doing anything.
Where in me shall I find the Divine?
If you have to look for it, you probably aren’t.
"All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine."
-- Socrates
Is it fair for God to hold us accountable for our actions if we have free will?
Oh, hell yeah. If you use your "free will" to do evil, what do you think God would do?
If God is ultimately in control, how can free will exist?
He is in control of creation, miracles, and giving us our free will. If we misuse our free will for evil, we will be punished. God is, ultimately, in control of everything, even giving us our free will.
Is it true that God has a plan for everyone?
Yes, but you can screw up God’s plan for you by exercising your free will.
What makes it difficult for some people, including myself, to not worry about things?
Don’t take on "drama" you have to worry about. I try to keep drama far away from my life. I strive to be truly happy always, and in all things, regardless of my circumstances. It is a choice. I’ve practiced this for 20 years and it has not failed me.
Will I ever find real love these days?
Are you actively looking? You won’t find it if you don’t look… everywhere.
Will you still be remembered 100 years after your death?
Probably not. I rarely think of people who have died, so I figure people won’t change. Unless you have published so people can read, you will be forgotten… in time. 100 years is a long time to remember.
“I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance.”
-- Beryl Markham
What are the benefits of being skilled at both chess and poker?
You have proved that you have an analytical mind.
Would you rather have a stable job and family or be extremely successful but have no personal relationships?
How boring to have no personal relationships. I’ll take a stable job and family. For me, “extremely successful” means my life is truly happy. It has nothing to do with having a job and a lot to do with being happy.
What is the word,  for feeling very happy and full of energy about something?
“Excited” at the prospect.
Why does it always seem like everybody is winging it and nobody knows what they're doing? Is it because God is a concept and not an actual being, and nobody knows the answers to the big questions?

It only “seems” like everybody is winging it. A lot of us really know what we’re doing. The fact that you brought God into the equation makes little sense. Whether God is a concept, or not, makes little sense to the first question, and almost nobody knows the answers to the “big” questions in the second question. Again, it only seems that most people are “winging it” when they aren’t.
Is it healthy to question everything about life and one's beliefs in God?
It is healthy to question everything, especially about life and God.
Who or what directs your life?
After 23 years in Air Force Intelligence, I can say that I direct my life. It is a benefit of being in a society that believes in free will.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
-- C.G. Jung
How can someone determine their level of wisdom if they have no knowledge?
If they have no knowledge, they have no wisdom. It will be a waste of time.
Can the existence of God be used as evidence that nature is not random?
If we could prove the existence of God, we would be on the right track to prove evidence that nature is not random. Unfortunately, atheists nor theists can prove the existence, or non-existence, of God. It would benefit both schools of thought if they would shut up about what they don’t know.
Is there any connection between being wise and being mature?
No.
Does having greater wisdom improve one's curiosity?
“Greater wisdom” has already proved one’s curiosity. One follows the other.
What is it in your mind about 4 am?
About 4:00 a.m. I am checking to see if there are stars out. If they are, I get dressed for my mile-plus morning walk. I do this religiously, every morning.
What are some examples of personal beliefs?
God or not, ethics, morals, life after death, and the like.
“Be brave to stand for what you believe in even if you stand alone.”
-- Roy T. Bennett

Questioning Mantras, Life, Religion, Ideas, Input, and Wisdom

'Expect nothing and hope for the best' is my mantra. A drama teacher called Joseph Blatchley told me that, and it's the best advice I've had. If you keep an open mind and don't expect too much, then you won't be disappointed."
-- Michelle Dockery

What mantra do you live your life by?
Strive to be truly happy always and in all things, regardless of your circumstances.
Do atheists know they have given up the right for their prayers to be heard?
If an atheist tries to pray, they aren’t an atheist. They have become an agnostic. Atheists may think they ahve given up their right to pray, but God has been waiting for them to turn around.
Why do some atheists respond with sarcasm when asked about their belief in God?
Because some atheists are ignorant... just like some theists.
How do we determine the validity of someone's beliefs if there is no concept of right or wrong?
We don’t need to. The validity of someone’s belief is up to them to validate, not us. If they think their belief is valid, so be it. They aren’t asking you to validate it. Who are you… or we? We have no concept of another’s belief paradigm. We think we do, but we really don’t. It is up to them to decide if it is right or wrong. We need to stay out of it.
How do you respond when someone asks if you believe in God?
Yes.
What was the most devastating moment in your life that eventually bounced back from, and how?
My divorce. I thought taking my life was the answer, but it would hurt… who? I gathered all my friends around me and built another life… without the likes of her. I became stronger than I ever was. I became more understanding and perpetually happy. This is the moment that I came up with striving to be truly happy always and in all things, regardless of my circumstances. It was a choice.
"A betrayal in a family is much more devastating than a betrayal among friends, or even lovers."
-- Ari Aster

What was the moment you realized that life had passed you by?

I am living, so if life “passed me by,” I wasn’t paying attention. It is my life, so I have control over it. Life doesn’t pass me by unless I let it. It will be my fault.
If achieving your dreams meant someone else had to give up theirs, would you still go for it?
If they are working hard, go for it. If they are slacking, they’d need to catch up to me.

What would your life look like if you let curiosity, not ambition, be your guide?
It will be exactly like it is. I have never let ambition guide me. Curiosity has always been my downfall… and my success. I have never had any ambition. If I had, I would not have experienced so much of life. People who let ambition guide them, miss out on what they might have experienced through curiosity.
Author's comment: Thanks, Tony! Very well-stated reply!
Do the morally corrupt find common grounds?
Usually when they clean out the coffee maker.
Why does everyone think communication is describing your mind's experience, because it is a "brain process" that transforms thoughts into words?
Because your brain, your mind, is communicating with you. You can transform those thoughts into words if you understand the message, the prime directive.
What's the point in life if all we do is work?
Learning. The point of life is to learn.
“It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much. ... The life we receive is not short, but we make it so; we are not ill-provided but use what we have wastefully.”
-- Lucius Annaeus Seneca
How can we determine the validity of our religion compared to others?
Would you like to enlighten us? Which “religion” you are referring to?
What do you really do for a living?

I helped to keep the country safe. Then, I helped to keep medical subjects safe. Now, I try to keep myself safe, in my retirement. Safety first, in all things.
What happens after death? What do I see after I die?
No one really knows. There are stories, but, you have to die, to find out if they are true.
How do atheists handle the fear of going to hell and not having an afterlife? How do they establish their moral code without belief in a higher power?
They don’t believe in hell or an afterlife. They manage a moral code without believing in a “higher power.” It is the difference between being good or bad. What they don’t buy into, is God. That’s it.
If science is true, if we die, where do we go to?
When it comes to death, science is guessing. No one died, for long, and came back to tell.
What is the reason for creationists ignoring scientific evidence for evolution and not accepting it as fact like other scientific theories such as gravity?
No one knows how we cropped up. There are a few theories, backed up by what we can glean from history, But the facts are dicey.  No one really knows… because we weren’t around to witness it.
“Intelligent design offers few answers. For instance, when and how did a designing intelligence intervene in life’s history? By creating the first DNA? The first cell? The first human? Was every species designed, or just a few early ones? Proponents of intelligent design theory frequently decline to be pinned down on these points. They do not even make real attempts to reconcile their disparate ideas about intelligent design. Instead, they pursue argument by exclusion—that is, they belittle evolutionary explanations as far-fetched or incomplete and then imply that only design-based alternatives remain.”
-- Scientific American Editors
Can an idea be right and wrong at the same time?
Iran should be bombed out of existence. But there are many innocent people there, who don’t agree with the leadership. It is right, and at the same time, it is wrong.
Is it more beneficial to pursue your passions, or to go with the flow in life?

Pursue your passions, if you can afford them. If not, flow with life and dabble in your passions. The point, I’m trying to make, is that your passions are important to your well-being. You might regret not including your passions in your life. I regret several ladies… but, that is another story.
Can a human have two souls?
No.
So long as we are young and in service, life looks cheerful & bright. Once we retire from service, why does life suddenly become purposeless & directionless?
You haven’t planned properly. I’m 71 and retired, twice. I do not need more true happiness than I have. I have more direction and purpose than I need in my retirement, thank you very much. My parents over-planned my retirement before they died. A "family trust" haunts me.
Is it considered wrong for an atheist to be arrogant about their beliefs?
Not more than theists. To be arrogant is wrong. Believe what you believe, and shut up about it.
Does believing in God mean you're religious?
Religion can be numbered in the pantheon of beliefs. I am not “religious,” per se. I am “spiritual.” My definition of God does not meet the requirements of other “religious” beliefs.
“Anyone who thinks sitting in church can make you a Christian must also think that sitting in a garage can make you a car.”
-- Garrison Keillor
Why does nobody seem to care about my input?
I’m not certain I have ever seen your input. And, if I’m not certain then your question may be deficient by including the term, “nobody.”
What is it called if something can't be proven wrong or right?
Up in the air.
“Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose.” Do you agree?
I so disagree. Some happiness is fleeting. You may truly love a person who is dying. This love may make you very happy. You are going to lose this person. But, it doesn’t matter to you. The true love, you feel, is worth whatever temporary happiness you get with them.  Even if it means you have to message them. True love makes distances disappear.
What motivates people with no future or job to keep living?
They realize that their problem is them. They know they need to keep on trying.
Are curiosity and self-awareness signs of maturity and being wise?
“Curiosity” is a trait learned at a very young age. Self-awareness comes a little later, and it is a sign of maturity. Being wise, on the other hand, may never occur. People go through their lives, never discovering wisdom, while children may display wisdom beyond their years.
What is the most important thing for you in your work?
Good sense. Good sense is beyond “common” sense, which doesn’t display much anymore.
“Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.”
-- Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Is wisdom a natural gift, or can we gradually get it?
Wisdom is not a natural gift. You can gradually get it.
Is it fair to stop working and rely on others to support you?
No. This is selfish. Personally, I would like to see someone beat the crap out of the person who stopped working. I mean, really? Others would step up to support a freeloader. Not on my watch.
How can I be liked by people if I'm a being without a soul?
If you were without a soul, you wouldn’t have asked this question.
Is it possible for God to have imperfections that we are unable to see?
Yes. He screwed up with Adam and Eve. I thought He was perfect. It shows that He is excellent, not perfect. Who puts a serpent in the Garden? To test Adam and Eve? But, I thought God was perfect. The entirety of Genesis has issues for the reader. And, then, we turn the page. There is a reason why God stopped giving the written word.
What is the most transformative experience you’ve ever had, and how did it shape who you are today?
Air Force Intelligence. It made me the man I am today.
Why does God make life so difficult?
He doesn’t. Everything you think is difficult is stuff you don’t want to deal with. Life is all about learning. Once you wrap your mind around this, life becomes a bit easier. Life is difficult because you need an excuse, or… you can deal with it, learn the lesson, and move on. It is a choice.
"Your success and happiness lie in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties."
-- Helen Keller
